How To Produce Music Electronically On A Budget

By: biggest fail

Firstly, electronic music production is not just the math of putting beats and sounds in a rhythmic pattern with a vst drum synthesizer but to become a good producer you need a little bit of talent which if you feel you have, great! If not I'm sure you'll learn something along the way.

I'll start by saying I have no dj'ing experience and although it may help when it comes to mixing it is not necessary to produce.

Step 1. Listen to a lot of music and listen closely. Which ever type of music you wish to produce listen to it and try to differentiate the sounds of the drums, bass, synth, voice, background effects etc

Step 2. Do a little research on which production program you will purchase i.e Ableton, reason, Cubase, fruity loops etc . . . I chose Ableton as it received such good reviews, is very easy to use and there are plenty of tutorials available for it on youtube, which brings me to my next point.

Step 3. Watch and watch and watch tutorials on any aspect of producing you are unsure of, naturally starting with the beginner tutorials. At this time you should be experimenting and testing ou the kit.

Step 4. Now I havn't mentioned any midi keyboards or controllers, but I spent about £250 on both and in time you will begin to incorporate them in to your production. Obviously do your research first.

Step 5. By now you should be tearing your hair out trying to find the perfect beat or perfect sound (which you will eventually find) once you start playing with the vst plugins available. There are tutorials available about how to tune the perfect sound out of a virtual instrement.

Step 6. Register with some online sample sites like www.looperman.com to not only download free samples but also upload your sample to the world of dj's and producers to get some feedback and see how well your tunes are going down.

Step 7. Once you are infront of a crowd of 100, 000 people give a mention to uncle mikes basic introduction to music production.
